Arlene George Umberger, age 77, of Elkwood, VA, passed away on October 16, 2025. Born July 21, 1948, to Gordon D. George, Jr, and Mary Geneva George, Arlene and her twin sister came into the world earlier than expected and weighed just over 5 lbs combined, medical miracles of that era. Arlene spent her life taking care of other people. She grew and canned vegetables all summer to make sure her family and anyone who needed it had hot meals throughout the year. She made meals for families who had experienced illness and loss and always contributed her delicious food to church and community functions. Arlene decorated her home for most holidays, but especially Christmas. If you ever came by while she was in the house, you would hear music of some kind playing on the radio in the kitchen while she worked. During her husband Jerry’s long illness, she took care of him 24 hours a day until his passing in 2021.
Surviving relatives include her children, daughter Amy Umberger and her partner John Ladusky of Locust Grove, son Jason Umberger and his wife Nicki Via Umberger of Culpeper, sister Joan George Lohr of Madison, twin sister Darlene George Barron and her husband Tommy Barron of Culpeper, sister Debra Jean George of Orange, brother Doug George of Pennsylvania, and sister-in-law Joan Umberger Andes of Elkwood. Arlene is also survived by a loving circle of grandchildren, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
In addition to her parents Gordon D. and Geneva George, Arlene was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, brother-in-law Mac Andes, brother-in-law Eddy Lohr, sister-in-law Beth Wheeland George, and mother- and father-in-law BB and Gladys Umberger.
