

Elwood Smoot, lovingly known as Pop-Pop, age 90 of Culpeper departed this world May 27, 2025. He as born in Culpeper on October 31,1934 to the late E. Russell (Buck) Smoot and Margaret Myers Hitt Smoot. Elwood is survived by his wife of 69 years Harlean Haverstock Smoot. He is also survived by a son, Bucky Smoot and wife Sandra; daughter Nadine Bulmer and husband Marcus. Elwood is survived by 8 grandchildren; Meghan Smoot and Darren McKinney, Sarah-Courtney Harris and husband Travis, Ryan Smoot and wife Ashley, Whitney Smoot, Pearson Smoot and wife Raegan, Connor Smoot and Shelby Brutkiewicz, Samantha Bulmer and Hailey Bulmer.
Elwood is also survived by 8 great-grandchildren Tulie Becker, Asher Bailey, Casey Harris and wife Caroline, Piper Harris, Harper-Gray Harris, Maddox Smoot, Baylor and Walker King. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Connie Smoot of Ophelia, VA; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Elwood was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Smoot of Ophelia and his sister Peggy Crane of Culpeper and a baby brother, Tommy, 11 months of age.
Elwood graduated from Culpeper High School in 1953 and worked with his father building the company E. Russell Smoot & Son. During this time Elwood built many homes, remodeled and built countless churches and commercial buildings in and around the area. He was very proud of building the Precious Blood Catholic Church sanctuary and The Culpeper Methodist Church. You could always tell a “Smoot built” home!
During this time Elwood built a Legacy. Elwood and his wife Harlean started their business, Cherry Street Building Supply in 1960. Cherry Street Building Supply is still thriving today 65 Years Later. He was also proud to be a member of The Undefeated 1952 Culpeper Football Team. Elwood enjoyed serving his community. He was a proud member of the Culpeper Volunteer Fire Department in his early years and continued serving his community throughout the years by building, which contributed to the growth Culpeper.
Elwood loved spending time with his family, tending to his garden in the summer, playing golf, watching all sporting events, especially The Washington Commanders.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers who always gave him loving care and a joke or two. Judy Garrison, Jeanne Anderson, Gloria Webster, Carolyn Willie and Pam Balderas.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Smoot, Pearson Smoot, Connor Smoot, Travis Harris, Casey Harris and Andy Becker. Honorary pallbearers are Maddox Smoot, Baylor King and Asher Bailey
Visitation for Elwood will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Clore- English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Hwy, Culpeper, VA 22701.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Culpeper United Methodist Church, 1233 Oaklawn Drive, Culpeper, VA 22701. Interment will follow at 12:00 PM at Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, VA.
The family would like to invite you to share some memories at Tuscany Hall, 21125 Kettle Club Rd, Culpeper following the service.
