

Esther James Putnam White passed away August 31, 2012 at Dogwood Village in Orange, Virginia whose staff the family would like to thank for the excellent care given to her during the last several months.
Esther was born on March 23, 1921 and spent most of her 91 years at the family home in Winston, Virginia. She retired from the Culpeper County School System after serving for 45 years as a teacher, principal and visiting teacher. Esther also served on the Culpeper County Library Board and was a volunteer at the Culpeper Hospital gift shop as well as being involved with the Lignum-Stevensburg Homemakers. As a lifelong member of Mitchells Presbyterian Church, Esther served as a deacon and elder, Sunday school teacher and treasurer, and as church historian.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Wallace White; parents Arthur Pembrooke Putnam and Effie Irmgard (Irma) Tancill Putnam; one sister, Katherine Putnam Stepanian, and six brothers, Lester Pembrooke Putnam, Frank Rudacill Putnam, Joseph Tancill Putnam, Arthur Rixey (Dick) Putnam, Jack Winston Putnam, and Daniel Mason Putnam.
She is survived by two sons; James Wallace (Wally) White and his wife Karen Hayes White of Palmyra, Virginia and Howard Arthur (Buddy) White and his wife Rosemarie Scott White of Warrenton, Virginia. Also surviving are three grandchildren; Erik Christopher White and his wife Rebecca White of Charlottesville, Virginia, James Cameron White of Palmyra, Virginia and Leah Rachelle White of New York, New York and one great granddaughter, Ella Grace White of Charlottesville, Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 pm on Friday, September 7, 2012, at the Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, Virginia. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Mitchells Presbyterian Church, 12229 Mitchell Road, Mitchells, Virginia. Burial will immediately follow at Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mitchells Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, P.O.Box 98, Mitchells, Virginia, 22729.
