Obituary of Gerald Vaden Umberger
Gerald Vaden Umberger (Jerry), age 70, of Elkwood, VA, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Born February 9, 1950, to Basil Bowman Umberger and Gladys Miller Umberger, Jerry made his life about and around trucking with BB Umberger and Son Trucking. He loved children, dogs (and cats to a lesser extent but never would have admitted it), feeding the birds and bears at his and Arlene’s property in the mountains, watching old westerns, and eating a good steak. He was a masterful storyteller. Right up to the end of his life, he told detailed, vivid stories about things he experienced while trucking and people he remembered from his childhood. Surviving relatives include his wife, Arlene George Umberger of Elkwood, daughter Amy Umberger and her partner John Ladusky of Locust Grove, son Jason Umberger and his wife Nicki Via Umberger of Culpeper, his sister Joan Umberger Andes of Elkwood, grandchildren Bristen, Hayden, and Lincoln Umberger of Culpeper, niece Donna Andes Bates and her husband Paul Bates of Culpeper, niece Lorie Andes of Elkwood, great nephew Treavor Bates and his wife Krissy Singleton Bates, and great niece Quinn-Lynn Bates, all of Culpeper. Jerry is also survived by a loving circle of in-laws and their children and grandchildren, cousins, extended family members, and a host of friends. In addition to his parents B.B and Gladys Miller Umberger, Jerry was preceded in death by brother B.B. Umberger, Jr., brother-in-law Mac Andes, brother-in-law Eddy Lohr, and mother- and father-in-law Gordon D. and Mary Geneva George. Graveside services will be held at Remington Cemetery, 11910 Cemetery Road, Remington, VA, Thursday, January 14, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Peyton Embrey and Pastor Don Williams officiating.
