
Dr. Harold Jackson Payne of Culpeper, VA. stepped into God’s eternal garden on November 25th, and a light went out of this world. Born in Reedville on April 13, 1931, Dr. Payne spent most of his early years in Richmond, VA. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, earned both his B.A. and M.S. from the University of Richmond, and completed his Doctor of Dentistry at the Medical College of VA. After beginning his dental career in Warrenton, he moved to Manassas where he opened his practice and spent most of his professional years. Following retirement, he relocated to Culpeper, where he was actively involved in the Culpeper United Methodist Church. He sang in the choir and acted as a Stephen Minister. An avid gardener Dr. Payne was a member of the Culpeper Garden Club, competing in both arrangements and horticulture. Doc was truly a Renaissance man, embracing both physical and mental development, and passionate about art, music, history, science, and family. He loved his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Dr. Payne was the son of Percy and Helen Haynie Payne. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Robert and Jimmy Payne, and sister Frances Swisher. He is survived by his devoted and best friend, Anthony Golladay, and by nieces and nephews: Dale (Jim) Sayers, Robert (Judy) Payne, John (Michele) Payne, Leslie (Mark) Wright, Brian Payne, Kenneth (Cyndy) Payne, Robert (Caren) Swisher, David (Candace) Swisher, Bonnie (Tim) Harper, and Dan (Suzanne) Swisher, as well as 25 great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Dr. Payne will be held Thursday, Dec. 4th, at 11:00 a.m. at Culpeper United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Culpeper United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, or the Culpeper Garden Club.
