

Hermine S. Thomas beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on January 23, 2026 at the age of 94. She was born on October 15, 1931 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to William Arthur and Dorcas Bowman Schrage. Hermine went to Kingston High School where she met the love of her life, Walter L. Thomas. After marrying in 1953 they came to Culpeper, VA. There Hermine served as secretary to the principal of Culpeper County High School. She was a stay-at-home mom for most of her children’s school years serving as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1973, she began working part time for the Commissioner of Revenue Office where she completed seventeen years of service, retiring as Chief Deputy Commissioner of Revenue in 1990. Hermine was a member of the Culpeper Jayceettes at the time they promoted the building of Culpeper Regional Hospital. She was a charter member of the Culpeper Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Board member and chairman of Volunteers during her time of service. She spent countless hours volunteering in the community as she had a passion for helping others.
Hermine’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife and the proud mother of four children: Kim (Carol) Thomas, Susan (Dennis) Duncan, Bruce (Teresa) Thomas, and David (Debbie) Thomas. She also leaves her adored grandchildren Leslie, Grant, Brittany, Jared, Stephanie, Savannah, Justin, Brandon, Bobby, and Zeke and her great grandchildren, Addison, Lena, Mason, Elijah, Elianah, and Cohan.
Hermine was a member of Culpeper United Methodist Church until she could no longer attend. She served on various boards and committees and made life long friends.
Hermine was predeceased by her parents, her brother Bill Schrage, her sister Louise Vaeli, and her husband, Walter Thomas.
The family would like to recognize and thank all of the wonderful people at The Culpeper and Piedmont Hospice for the loving care they have shown to Hermine and her family.
Hermine’s wishes were to have a joint service for her and Walt, who passed away during Covid. Family and friends will meet at Culpeper United Methodist Church (1233 Oaklawn Dr. Culpeper, VA) on Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 11:00-12:00 for visitation with a service following at 12:00. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Culpeper United Methodist Church, Culpeper County Band Boosters designated for Walt Thomas Scholarship fund, (P.O. Box 301, Culpeper, VA 22701), or Hospice of the Piedmont (1200 Sunset Lane, Suite 2320 Culpeper, VA 22701).
