Elder L. Richard Cox of Culpeper, VA, left this life December 5, 2015, at 12:00 p.m. after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sarah Dallas Cox, his daughter, Diane C. Hutchinson and her husband Gary, his sons; William “Ron” Blakely and his wife Suzy and Kevin Blakely and his wife Connie; all of Chesterfield, VA, daughter-in-law, Tammy Blakely and six grandchildren; Allison B. Powell and Jennifer Blakely of California, Michelle, Katie, Christopher Hutchison and Bridget Blakely; all of Chesterfield, VA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beryl Blakely Cox, infant daughter, Rene, sister, Marie Pickard and son, Bruce J. Blakely.
Richard retired from AT&T after 25 years of service as a mechanical engineer. He was ordained to ministry in April 1989 where his real life’s work began.
Richard was a member and pastor of the Thornton Gap Primitive Baptist Church in Sperryville, VA for the past 15 years. He also pastored the Waterlick Primitive Baptist Church near Front Royal, VA, the Barrows Run Primitive Baptist Church in Opal, VA, and filled a standing appointment at the Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.
Richard served in the Navy during WWII and had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born October 17, 1925 to the late Lloyd T, and Nora Beck Cox of Jamestown, N.C. He moved to Richmond, VA in the early seventies due to a job transfer. After retirement he and his second wife moved back to N.C. to be near his sister who had been diagnosed with leukemia. They moved to Culpeper, VA in 2000 after being called as pastor to Thornton Gap Primitive Baptist Church.
He was an avid bowler until his bout with cancer and treatments of chemo left him too weak to participate. As a dedicated minister, his greatest desire was to serve the Lord by serving his people. During the five years he fought cancer, he only missed a few meetings when he was hospitalized. He traveled and preached in many states and was well respected by all who knew him.
