Lucy Harris Stone

Lucy Stone, 94, of Remington, Virginia, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community. Mrs. Stone was born May 16, 1918 in Batna, Virginia to Gillette Gordon Harris Sr. and Lanetta Goodwyn Harris. Preceding her in death were her parents, four siblings, Charles Harris, G. Gordon Harris, Frances Owens and Sallie Hart Inge and her husband, Robert Chilton Stone. Surviving Mrs. Stone are her daughters, Dr. Sallie Hart Stone Cook and her husband K. Marshall Cook, Dr. Susan Goodwyn Stone Griffin ; her brother, Wilfred L. Harris; her grandchildren, Sarah Cook Martin and husband William A. Martin III, Dr. Elizabeth Cook Miller and husband Andrew C. Miller, Susan Hart Cook, Alfred Charles Griffin III, Robert Chilton Griffin and Sallie Hart Griffin; her great grandchildren, Katherine Harris Martin, Sallie Pade Martin and Douglas Marshall Miller.

Mrs. Stone graduated from Mary Washington College in 1939 and was described in her yearbook with her “Sunny Smile and winning ways; clear thinking an established habit and straightforwardness a characteristic”. Before marriage, Mrs. Stone, known as “Miss Harris” was a business subject teacher, basketball coach and assistant principal of Warrenton High School. In the high school paper, “Miss Harris” won praises that her business acumen “enables students to secure profitable jobs” and her basketball talent, shorthand speed and soft spoken manner made her an unusual and excellent teacher.

Mrs. Stone was also an active and lifetime member of the Remington Garden Club and enjoyed gardening at her home in Remington. She and her husband Chilton travelled extensively visiting many countries in North and South America and Europe numerous times. She remained a member of Lael Baptist Church and routinely attended St Lukes Episcopal Church in Remington with her family.

Graveside services will be held at the Lael Baptist Church cemetery at 11AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to Lael Baptist Church, 23296 Lignum Rd, Lignum, Va 22726.
