Mary Elizabeth Murphy Jameson

Mary Elizabeth Murphy Jameson, 88, passed away at Culpeper Regional Hospital February 10, 2013. Mary was born to the late Thomas J. and Lula P. Harris Murphy August 5, 1924 in Waco, Texas. Mary graduated from Waco High School May 23, 1942 and attended Baylor University. While there, she was a member of The Browning Society, which houses the world’s largest collection of Elizabeth Barrett Browning at the Baylor Little Theater in the Waco Civic Theater. While attending school, she was employed at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and Monnings Dry Goods.

Mary relocated to Culpeper, Virginia in 1946 and was married to George Maxwell Jameson, Jr., whom she met when he served as a Flight Lieutenant on B25s while stationed at Blackland Army Air Base in Waco, Texas.

Mary was a former teacher, serving schools in Orange and Albemarle Counties; served as Clerk for the Town of Scottsville; Vice Chairman for Albemarle County Democrats; Girl Scout leader; Sunday School teacher; President of the Scottsville United Daughters of the Confederacy; a member of the Scottsville Garden Club and worked actively with the Culpeper-Madison Red Cross. She was also a member of the Culpeper Presbyterian Church.

Surviving Mary are many friends who she considered family. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Dr. James Harris and Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Robbins Harris; her paternal grandparents, James M. and Victoria E. Manning Murphy; sisters, Gertrude Murphy Adamik; and Rosa Lee Murphy Norman; and a brother, Glenn Thomas Murphy.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, February 14, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Culpeper Presbyterian Church, 215 S. Main Street, Culpeper, with Dr. Wayne Bernardo presiding. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Culpeper Humane Society, P. O. Box 1224, Culpeper; Reva Volunteer Fire Department, 18320 Birmingham Road, Culpeper; or Culpeper Presbyterian Church, 215 S. Main Street Culpeper.
