

Randolph Clater, 75, of Sperryville, VA passed away on August 24, 2015 at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, VA. Randolph was born on May 31, 1940 in Rappahannock County to the late James and Maggie Clater. He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Joe and Bobby Clater, and one sister, Shirley Clater all of Sperryville. Randolph is survived by his wife of 52 years Dorothy Payne Clater, a daughter, Pamela Jenkins and his pride and joy, granddaughter Brooklynn Jenkins, all of Sperryville. He is also survived by one brother and three sisters, Ernest Clater and wife Evon of Front Royal Virginia, Peggy Wayland and husband Richard of Boston VA, Jean Burke of Delaware, and Ruth Merchant of Front Royal, VA. He is also survived by a very special great nephew, Ian Thompson who has lived with him off and on for 25 years, as well as a number of other nieces and nephews.
Randolph was an avid coin collector and stamp collector. He worked at the Sperryville Corner Store for over 55 years. He started his career as a young man working for Jimmy and Myrtle Falls who owned the store. He and Wilson Burke then bought the store in the early 1960s and then sold it in the early 1980s. Randolph and his wife Dorothy became sole owners in the mid-1980s and owned and operated the store along with daughter Pam until he sold the business to the Thompson family in 2000. Randolph continued to work for the Thompsons until March of 2015 when he had to quit due to illness.
The Corner Store and his family were Randolph’s life.
