Scott Garris Yancey, of Culpeper, died peacefully at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community on March 27, 2013. Born in Charlottesville on February 16, 1924, he was the son of Price and Helen Yancey of Culpeper.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jen Lea Yancey, and his sister Pauline Yancey Root.
Survivors include his three children, David Yancey of Tallahassee, FL, Scott Yancey, Jr. of Oakton, and Elizabeth Connors of Arlington; seven grandchildren, Shannon Freeman, Genevieve Yancey, Melissa Brower, Matthew Yancey, George Connors, Scott Davis Connors, and Caroline Connors; and three great-grandchildren, Harper Price Freeman, Savannah Jeanne Freeman, and Sutton Lea Brower.
Following service in the Army during World War II, Scott attended The University of Virginia. After school, he joined his father at the Yancey Bark and Lumber Company. His professional life fit well with his love of wood-working; his children’s most prized possessions are of furniture crafted by Scott.
Scott’s later years were spent with the Quarles Oil Company, with the Chamber of Commerce in Culpeper, and with its office of Economic Development. In connection with the latter responsibilities, he took pride in helping Culpeper develop its Main Street corridor and widen its economic base while continuing to preserve Culpeper’s history and quality of life.
A member of the Culpeper Rotary Club, Scott was also a faithful and life-long member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, attending Sunday School and often serving on the Vestry.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community (CBRC) Benevolence Fund, 12425 Village Loop, Culpeper, VA 22701. Funeral services will be held on Saturday April 6th at 11 a.m. at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, with a reception in the church parish hall immediately following.
