
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 29 at Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West Street, Culpeper, Virginia 22701. Pastors John Burke and Jeff Light will be officiating. Immediately following, Steve will be laid to rest at Culpeper National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Honor Guard of the U.S. Secret Service and the Honor Guard of the V.F.W. Post 2524. The family and friends' visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, Sunday, December 28 at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, Virginia 22701.
Steve was born on February 13, 1944 in Culpeper, Virginia to James E. Butler and Margie Compton Butler Cooper. He attended Culpeper County High School and went on to serve four years in the U. S. Air Force. On March 28, 1964 he married the love of his life, Rebecca “Becky” Gonzalez of Arizona. Steve retired with twenty years of
service to the U.S. Secret Service and also from Paul Mellon's Rokeby Farms as Head of Security. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Scrabble, Virginia. He was an avid farmer, small businessman, hunter and fisherman. He spent most of his time with his beloved family and farming the land he loved.
The family wishes to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to UVA Culpeper Hospital and Heartland Hospice for their loving care and support during his battle with lung cancer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Steve Butler to UVA Culpeper Hospital, 550 Sunset Lane, Culpeper, Virginia 22701.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife, Becky, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage this past Spring on March 28, 2014. He is also survived by his daughter, Stefanie Shaw and her husband Ricky; his oldest son Doug and his wife Karin; and his youngest son Greg and his wife, Catherine. He also had six beloved grandchildren: Steven, Jonathan, Jessica, Miranda, Sophia, and Savannah. He also leaves behind his loving mother Margie Cooper and stepfather Curtis Cooper, his sister Linda Butler and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, James Butler. Steve was a loving husband, father, and a friend to all.
