Antonia Maturino was born in Bakersfield, California on January 17, 1926. She was one of seven children to Simon Velazquez and Maria Dolores Delgado. The family moved from Bakersfield, to Palms, Tijuanita, Lopez Ranch and then to Pancho Manzon Ranch. Schools varied from La Ballona, to Playa Del Rey Elementary School, and then finally a few years at Venice High School - completing her education at Junior year.
Antonia and Eddie met at Lopez Ranch when she was about 17 years-old, while picking onions with her best friend, Angie. Four years later on April 24th, 1947, they were married! Antonia was 21 years-old and Eddie was 23. They initially lived in the Santa Monica area and then found their forever home on Allin Street in Culver City (1951). They remained there throughout the years, happily welcoming family and friends into their home. For decades, both Eddie and Antonia gladly opened their doors for numerous family functions and celebrations. They loved to host parties and were equally giving as a couple with their time, generosity and kindness to everyone around them.
Throughout her life, Antonia worked in a variety of environments. She was a factory worker, worked in electronics, employed by Mattel, and was also a horticulturist for ten years. Generous with her time, Antonia also assisted children in reading, who attended St. Gerard Majella. Besides work, Antonia had many interests and hobbies. She loved to garden and took pride in manicuring her flowers and plants around her home. The Dodgers were always number one and her favorite baseball player was Mookie Betts. If a game was on, she was watching it on TV! Antonia loved to collect coins and enjoyed filling many coin books that she would later share with family members. Puzzles brought her happiness and peace, especially once she completed a really difficult one! She also had a fond interest in maps and stamp collecting.
For decades, Antonia was highly involved within her community and church groups. She was most proud of her involvement in the Grupo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de San Gerardo Majella. She was a proud Guadalupana! Antonia was a member of the Mar Vista Seniors Club as well as the St. Gerard’s Seniors Club. Through these organizations, she enjoyed traveling to many places such as: Canada, Mexico, San Francisco, New Mexico, the Grand Canyon, Laughlin, and Las Vegas.
Antonia was the proud godmother to over 15 godchildren and had countless nieces and nephews. She also adored her little dog, Sparky who she lovingly shared with Eddie.
Antonia celebrated her milestone, 99th birthday on January 17, 2025. She lived to share a few more months with her family and passed away quietly, surrounded by her loved ones in the afternoon of April 27th, 2025 - the Day of Divine Mercy. Along with her nieces and nephews, she is survived by Eddie’s nephew, Steve Maturino and sister-in-law, Toni Maturino.
