Jovan Raheem Matthews passed away from a heart attack in his home, February 22, 2025, at 1:52 AM, in the loving arms of his mother and fiancée, Brielle Moore.
Jovan Raheem Matthews, born October 31, 1983, was the only child born to the union of Harry William Matthews and Patricia James Matthews. He was a Monday’s Child, a Halloween baby, and a proud Scorpio King.
He attended Century Park Elementary School, John Burroughs Middle School, John Marshall High School, and Southwest City College, all in Los Angeles. He grew up at Southwood Baptist Church singing in the Children’s Choir.
At an early age, Jovan loved drawing. He would draw caricatures of Disney themes, family and friends and give them away as gifts. He also loved playing video games, and board games with family. Later in adult hood, he oversaw “Games” when California hosted our “Sorrells Family Reunion”.
As a teen, he developed a love of cars, guns and the Viking Football Team. As a young adult, he started racing and collecting cars and handguns. He bought appropriate handguns for his mom and fiancée and took them to the Gun Range for practice. He was an outgoing, people person and loved to talk. He could hold a conversation with you about almost anything, especially his beloved Viking Football Team. Somewhere along, he acquired his nicknames, “JO” short for Jovan and “Bgdaddy”.
Jovan worked as an Educational Aid for the Los Angeles Unified School District, Early Childhood Education Division for 21 years. He loved working with children, and they loved him. He always strived to be the best supportive Aid for the children.
In September 2017, he met the love of his life, Brielle S. Moore. They were planning their wedding for September 2025. From the time they met, they were inseparable; he could always make her laugh. He and Brie spent lots
of time together and with his mom. He loved his vacations! And they would take at least three to four vacations a year.
Jovan was an excellent! Son, and a loving wonderful Fiancée. He did everything to see that his mom and Brie were well taken care of. He did the grocery shopping, and he would prepare special meals for them. He would plan the vacations and weekend trips, sort out the arrangements and take care of the logistics. No worries. He even planned a special Mother’s Day Cruise for his mom, auntie Carol and auntie Jeanie. Those were the types of things that he did.
Jovan was preceded in death by his father, Harry W. Matthews; grandmothers Crysteline Sorrells James and Carolyn Neely Jones Dews; uncles Johnny Eddie James, Jr. and Clarence Lee James; cousins Crysteline Malone, Ather Malone III, Lavette Morrow, Brittneeh Williams and Joshua Roberson.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother Patricia J. Matthews and fiancée Brielle Moore; sisters Tina Matthews and Amaniee Matthews McBrier; aunts Carol Morrow, Joan Hayes, and Jeanie James; cousins Lisa James, Karen James, Nekole Iwamizu, Charmaine Alexander, Alexis Williams and Sade Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends.
