OBITUARY

Mark Robert Sieke

June 29, 1957March 18, 2013

A most beloved man, Mark R. Sieke of Culver City passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on March 18, 2013. Born in NYC, Mark grew up in the Sunnyside and Flushing areas of Queens and then Richmond, Indiana before moving to Fullerton, California in 1972. He graduated first in his class from Sunny Hills High School in 1975 and then graduated magna cum laude from UCLA in 1979. He worked first as a CPA for Deloitte, Haskins and Sells, and then entered UC Berkeley Boalt School of Law in 1981, graduating in 1984. Mark was known as a brilliant tax lawyer, and he worked in this capacity for several firms over the years, most recently Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp. He was a believer in collegiality and collaboration and was most fulfilled when he was able to mentor, co-create, assist or inspire others. At home, he was the endlessly proud and supportive father of two children, Alison and Ben, who delighted him in every way and received his faithful attention at all turns. Mark served on the Board of the Actors Gang in Culver City, and previously for the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts at Culver City High School, and was the attorney for Playing For Change. Avid music collector, laugher and adventurer, he was a unique individual who insisted on seeing or bringing out the best in people and will be remembered, as he already has, as one of the nicest and warmest people one could ever meet. In addition to Ben and Ali, he leaves behind his wife Janet Bowden, long-separated, brother Eric T. Sieke of Manhattan Beach, Eric's wife Judith Bloom and their daughter Susanna Sieke, his love Susan and dear friend Claudette, and many, many more friends who will never forget him. A memorial service for Mark will be held on Sunday, March 24 from 3 to 5 pm at the Culver Hotel, 9400 Culver Blvd, Culver City, with stories of Mark being shared. Ties, suits and black unnecessary. Donations may be made in his memory to The Actor's Gang, Playing for Change or Culver City High School's AVPA.

Mark was an absolutely lovely man. It was great to know him for the brief period that I did. His warm sense of humor made me laugh often and his excellent taste in music was a topic of many interesting conversations. Mark will be missed.

I only briefly knew Mark. And yes, I would concur that he was "the nicest and warmest person one could ever meet". His lovely daughter Alison had stepped aside from his invitation to see The Cars play in concert in May of 2011. She said "Dad let Roger use the ticket on his birthday and go instead of me". So I had the opportunity to hang out with this wonderful man and listen to a favorite "band from the past"! Very fun experience indeed. I am so thankful for that. And, more recently we got to hang out for lunch. I said I would buy but he "stole" that giving moment from me and would not let me buy lunch!

What a sad day it was to hear that he had so suddenly "checked out" without any provocation that anyone was aware of. I am glad to have had the opportunity to interact with such a fine person if but for a brief time. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends for their tremendous loss and pain. My prayers are with you. May God receive Mark into his Infinite Heart.
