Mary Helen Caraballo was born on April 19, 1948 to loving parents Elisio and Esther Marquez. From the start, she was adored by her father, who lovingly doted on her. She was steeped in her faith, having attended parochial school throughout her childhood.
She had four siblings: Richard, Jody, Denice, and Claudia; and she loved each of them dearly. She was also close to her cousins, having spent much of her teenage years enjoying their company, be it cruising, camping, or just hanging out. Mary Helen was very close to many of her aunts and uncles as well. She had special relationships with her Auntie Cruz, Auntie Tonya, Auntie Cha-Cha, Auntie Nana, Uncle Lonnie, and Uncle Sam, to name a few.
She cherished these relationships and carried many of them throughout her life, having various adventures with them, be it trips to Vegas, overnight trips to local casinos, to simple things as meeting for lunch or dinner. If there was a family event, she was there.
When Mary Helen became a mother, she was incredibly devoted, attentive, and loving to her only child, Stacey. They were inseparable, having many of their own adventures together including trips all over. They were very close throughout Stacey’s life.
She is also remembered as being an amazing Auntie herself, to her many nieces and nephews. She was lovingly called “the best auntie in the whole wide world” by her eldest niece.
Let us take a few moments to grieve her loss, but also remember that her life was full of happiness and most importantly, full of love. Love for her parents, love for her siblings, love for her extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, but most importantly, the unquenchable love for her daughter.
Love is what drove my mother. Love is what defined her. With love is how we should remember her.
