Melvin Lee Van Horn passed away peacefully at his home on October 7th in Culver City, Ca. surrounded by family. Mel was born on October 27th, 1931 in Lexington, Ne., and moved to Los Angeles in 1942. Mel graduated from Venice High School, then served our Country in the branch of the Navy as a Radiotelegraph Operator communicating Morse code during the Korean war. He was employed as an Aeronautical Engineer with Hughes Aircraft for 40 years. Following his retirement he attended DeVry University to earn his certificate in Computer Technology. He earned his Pilot's License and was an avid Bowler, winning several trophies. Mel is known as a quiet observer who communicated with his eyes and smile, and always had something witty to say. Survived by his wife, Angela Imam-Van Horn, his sister, Evelyn Van Horn, and his three children, Nadira, Karim and Soroya as well as several nieces, nephews and friends who called him "Uncle Mel". Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, at Gates, Kingsley & Gates, 4220 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, Ca.
