

Peggy Yolanda Roberts was born on April 5, 1933 in Havana, Cuba. She was the youngest of three children; her parents were Beca Tonsingnh and Luther Gill. At the age of 6, Peggy’s family returned to Kingston, Jamaica. At the age of 13, she moved to New York. She attended Morris High School in Bronx, New York, where she excelled in mathematics.
Peggy traveled to Los Angeles in search of a better life where she stayed with devoted family members. She gained employment with her older brother, Alberto James De Veaux at his business, DeVoe Travel Services; the first licensed African-American owned travel agency in the United States.
Peggy’s best friend, Vivian Jeanette Smith, “Dossie” introduced her to the love of her life, Eugene V. Roberts, while he was in the Air Force. They were married on October 3, 1954 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. The couple was blessed with two children, Patricia and Paul.
Peggy held several jobs after she moved to Los Angeles but found a career with Los Angeles County Department of Registrar of Voters. After 42 years of service, she retired from the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder on March 31, 2008. Although she retired, she continued her friendship with co-workers and attended monthly Sunday brunches with a special group known as “The Chosen Few”.
Peggy was a member of several community involved organizations and social clubs, a significant highlight in her life. They included The Doll League and The Magnificent Seven Plus One, otherwise known as The Grandmothers’ Club, where she established and maintained friendships lasting for more than fifty years. She was an avid Laker and Dodger fan as well as a faithful Tiger Woods follower. Peggy had a deep love for the theatre, live performances as well as the cinema. She enjoyed good cuisine and loved photography. Most importantly, Peggy had an immense love of her family and friends and was always known as the family “gatherer”. It was always a tradition to gather at Peggy’s home for holidays, special occasions and actually, any occasion. Peggy’s house was always filled with wonderful company, delicious food and was undoubtedly captured by an abundance of memorable photos!
Peggy was a very caring, helpful, thoughtful and giving individual. Her love for family and friends was evident to all who adored and loved her. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Alberto and Jackie and her beloved husband Eugene. Peggy is survived by daughter Patricia, son Paul (Linsey), grandchildren Lauryn, Gracyn and Ayden, sister-in-laws, Norma De Veaux, Martha De Veaux, Sarah Olivia Roberts Cauthen, Imogene Roberts Howard and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and close friends. Peggy’s special extended family includes Anita Amos, Clara Magnolia Barrios, Kevin and Lisa Harris and Roderick and Deborah Miller as well as surrogate grandchildren, Siana Amos, Kyle Harris, Camille Harris, Alexandria Miller and Miles Miller.
Peggy Yolanda Roberts made her journey to be with her Lord and Savior on July 1, 2015. Peggy will be greatly missed by all. Her loyal, generous and loving spirit will live on and be cherished in our hearts forever.
