After a life well-lived, Bert’s family are saying goodbye. Born in Archibald Settlement, NB to the late Alpheaus Winton and Mary Casilda (Archibald) Winton.
He is survived by his two sons, Arthur (Sharon) of Belledune, NB, and David (Donna) of Dalhousie, NB; six grandchildren, Mary McCann, Amanda Bursey (Alistair), Emily Winton, Laura Galić (Mark), Bonnie Winton, and Alexander Robert Winton; three great-grandsons, John McCann & Clark & George Bursey and many nieces and nephews.
Bert was predeceased by his wife, Rhoda (Hickey) in April of 2018 and had a great void since that time. Just before she passed, they had celebrated their 75th anniversary on December 28, 2017. He was also predeceased by his two brothers, John (Audrey Girvan) and Douglas (Vie Godin), as well as two sisters, Barbara (Weldon) Clowater and Muriel (Bud) McNair.
Bert worked many years side-by-side with his father in the lumber and sawmill business. Seeing a need for a building supply store with the construction of the Belledune Smelter, he built Winton Building Supplies in central Jacquet River in 1963 as well as owning and operating MacMillan’s Retail Store, a grocery and general store facility which many locals depended on and appreciated the small-town service. Bert would tend to the hardware needs while Rhoda to the grocery facility. When MacMillan’s was lost to a fire in 1997, the focus switched to the hardware store, which still exists today.
Bert also served on many community-based services including the Industrial Commission Board, and served on the Board of Directors for Saint Joseph’s Hospital. He was the first Chairperson and was instrumental in obtaining the Jacquet River Health Center medical facility in that community.
Bert was a businessman until the end—even in his discussions at the nursing home daily; always worried about the price of lumber, inventory costs, and cost of living!
There will a graveside ceremony and celebration of life for both Rhoda and Robert at a later date.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Villa Renaissance; your compassion, care, and over-the-top service that you provide is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
Funeral arrangements are in the case of Maher’s Funeral Home, Dalhousie, NB.
