It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Callum MacPhee on January 27, 2024, at the age of 76. Born in Montague, Prince Edward Island on August 26, 1947, he was the son of the late John MacPhee and Alice (MacPherson) MacPhee.
Callum grew up on various Canadian Air Force Bases.
Callum is survived by his beloved wife Shelley, his two daughters Stacey and Alison, his son-in-law Mark Vautour, as well as his granddaughters, Oliva and Alexis Vautour.
He is also survived by his siblings: Marjorie MacPhee of Miramichi, NB; Douglas MacPhee (Rosemary) of Surrey, BC; Jean Dunlop (Rob) of Ottawa, ON; Anne Richards (Ed) of Ottawa, ON; Jack MacPhee (Hsiao-Wei) of Salt Spring Island, BC; Lynn MacPhee of Miramichi, NB and Brenda McInnis (Joseph) of Brooks, AB.
Callum graduated from St. Thomas University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education. He also completed his Masters of Education from University of New Brunswick.
He spent 30 years as a teacher at Dalhousie Regional High School including the Vice Principal role for 4 years. He was Principal of Sugarloaf Senior High School the last 5 years of his career. Throughout his teaching career, Callum was involved in coaching and organizing different sports. He was also a student council advisor for many years and dedicated to student activities.
Callum was a proud member of the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association and held a number of roles in both regional and provincial levels. Upon his retirement, he was an active member of the New Brunswick Society of Retired Teachers.
Callum moved to Dalhousie in 1970 as a goaltender for the Dalhousie Moosehead Rangers. He quickly became involved in Dalhousie Minor Hockey Association, coaching and holding leadership positions. He also volunteered with Les Aventuriers Cross Country Ski Club and Biathlon, Restigouche Golf and Country Club and 2003 Canada Winter Games.
He was inducted into the St. Thomas University Sports Wall of Fame as a member of a hockey team and as an individual athlete. He was also inducted three times into the Dalhousie Sports Hall of Fame as a member of a baseball team, a hockey coach and a builder.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing a variety of sports. Callum loved music and loved dancing with Shelley.
A Funeral Service for Callum will be held at St. John Bosco Church in Dalhousie on Friday, March 22 at 11:00 am.
