Helen was born on December 27, 1933, in Gaston County to the late Ernest Caleb and Hazel Marie Carpenter Pasour. She grew up on a farm in the Costner School community working with her mom, dad and three brothers. She attended Costner Elementary School and graduated from Dallas High School in 1951. Helen married Davis A. Rhyne on September 5, 1953. After marriage she worked for Akers Motor Lines and part-time in the Costner Elementary School cafeteria. When her children were born, she devoted herself to caring for her family.
Helen worked the polls for the Board of Elections and was a member of the Agriculture Center VFD ladies’ auxiliary. She was a lifelong, active member of Antioch Lutheran Church in Dallas, NC, where she was secretary of her Sunday School class, a member of the NAOMI Women’s Group, and a member of the phone prayer chain. She organized and directed funeral meals for many years. She loved the Lord and her church family, faithfully attending Sunday School, Worship Services and events at the church. She was always willing to help out where needed and had an endless supply of pound cakes ready when needed. Helen was also in the Antioch Quilting Group where she and others hand-tied quilts to donate to disaster relief organizations.
Helen had a loving, playful spirit that would light up any room. Her sense of humor was eclipsed only by the love she had for her family. She was a pro at spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom affectionately call her “Bammaw”. Sunday night suppers at Bammaw’s, followed by baseball in the backyard will always bring back fun memories. Baking cakes for family and friends was one of her favorite ways to show her love for them. Her grandchildren also benefited from the apple pies, pumpkin pies, banana bread, chex mix, and white chocolate covered Oreos.
Talking on the telephone with friends every day was very important to her. Even after she went to Peak Resources, she continued her nightly talks with friends for quite a while.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Davis A. Rhyne; brothers and sisters-in-law James Pasour (Helen), and Glenn Pasour (Sarah); brothers-in-law Gene Rhyne (Sue), and Bobby Rhyne; great granddaughter Ruby Eliza-Marie Rhyne.
Helen is survived by daughters Gail Summey (Steve), Patti White (John) and son Jeff Rhyne (Alma); brother Ernest C. Pasour Jr. (Adaline); Sister-in-law Frances Rhyne (Nelson Hoffman); grandchildren Jeremy Summey (Danielle), Beth Farmer (Tyler), Sean White (Hannah), Jacob Rhyne (Jaclyn), and Joseph Rhyne; great-grandchildren Davis and Anna Farmer, Hadley White, and Nolan and Madelyn Rhyne; numerous nieces and nephews.
