A native of Gaston County, he was the son of Ricky Lee Kirkland and the late Olene Jenkins Kirkland.
He is survived by his father and stepmother, Ricky and Faye Kirkland; brothers, Robert Lee Kirkland, Danny Bingham; stepbrothers, Jeff, Mark and Mike Mitchem; stepsisters, Penny Mitchem, Susan Jones and Denise Gallant.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Kirkland.
A graveside service will be held 10 am Saturday at High Shoals Memorial Gardens.
