Thank you all for coming today to celebrate the life of my grandma, Abelina Martinez de Velasquez. This is one gathering that my grandma would have loved. Allow me to briefly describe my grandma. She was a proud wife to Tobias Velasquez. They were married for 55 long wonderful years, a mother to five children, a grandmother, great grandmother, a sister and a friend to many. She was born on November 10th, 1947. My grandma and grandpa lived in Mexico for a short time then moved to Dallas and raised wonderful kids and grandkids. If you knew my grandma she was one to make you food instantly and you would be surprised on how quickly she did it too. I swear she could open up her own restaurant if she wanted with the good food she made. Not only was she a great cook but she was a hard working person you couldn’t tell her she couldn’t do it because she would prove you wrong. From washing dishes to cutting the yard outside. There wasn’t one thing that she couldn’t do; she literally took the phrase, “women do it better” to a whole different level.
A memory I have with my abuela is making capirotada. Abuela wasn’t one to tell you the “official recipe” on how to make things but she would show you how. She was very detailed to how things needed to be done so that everything came out well. This past year around Christmas, she showed the grandchildren how to make certain deserts like buñuelos or empanadas. We always said that time was the best gift we could get. Time, is never on our side but we have to stop and smell the roses as they say. Meaning to stop and enjoy life for a second. Goodbyes are not forever, and not the end either. It simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again.
