He attended grade school in a 1 room schoolhouse on the farm until the 4th grade when his family moved to Belleville, Kansas. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1945. Al was first employed by the Rock Island Railroad in Belleville, Kansas at age 15, due to the shortage of available men during World War II.
After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attended the Line and Station School at Port Hueneme, California, and served in the 103rd U.S. Naval Construction Battalion on Guam at the close of World War II. After moving his family to Dallas, Texas in 1967, he owned several small businesses, including a successful landscaping business which was later passed on to two of his sons. He then spent 24 years as a real estate agent, after which he retired in 2007. Al’s greatest passions were fishing and travel, which he always made time for. A year before his death, he finally realized his lifelong dream to visit Poland, where his grandparents had immigrated from.
