Dr. Roberts was known for his love of family, especially his wife and lifelong companion Diane Truett Roberts, to whom he was married for 73 years. On several occasions, he said the best decision he ever made was marrying Diane. They loved traveling together, especially to Paris, the French Countryside and Santa Fe. He and Diane shared a love for reading, art and exploration of new places and experiences.
Dr. Roberts was a lifelong Texan, born March 7, 1930, in Fort Worth, Texas. Like his surgeon father, he was a highly accomplished physician. He attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he met Diane Truett, and they married in 1952. He went on to earn his medical degree from Southwestern Medical School.
Dr. Roberts was a renowned researcher, a pioneer specialist in nephrology, a general internist and diagnostician, an Army doctor, an administrator, a TV personality, and a teacher. He described his own development as a physician against the backdrop of the dramatic changes in medicine in his memoir A Lifetime in Medicine. He served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at UT-Southwestern and co-host of the 1980s PBS health television series Here's to Your Health. He was awarded a commendation ribbon for meritorious service from the Army.
During his career, he earned the reputation as a brilliant diagnostician. He often said that “if you listen to your patients, they’ll tell you what’s wrong with them.”
Dr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents Albert Dee Roberts and Irene Lewis; brothers Dr. Robert Roberts, George Roberts and Dr. John Rogers Moroney Jr.; and daughter Brenda.
He is survived by his wife Diane of Dallas; son Truett Roberts and wife Carroll Swenson-Roberts of Dallas and Fairfax, California; daughter Hillary Roberts Marx and husband Robert Marx of New York, New York; grandchildren Sara Roberts of Los Angeles, California; Carina Marx of Los Angeles, California; and numerous other relatives, all of whom loved him deeply.
