Andrew Ignatius Jeremiah, affectionately known as "Nelson" or "Jerry," was born on April 22, 1939, in St. David's, Grenada, West Indies, to the late James ("Harry") Jeremiah and Emelda Alexandrina Francis.
In the late 1960s, he came to the United States in search of new opportunities and a brighter future. It was here that he met the love of his life, Willa Ruth Morrow (Doris). They were united in marriage on July 4, 1978. To this union, one child was born, Christopher Andrew Jeremiah. He was also blessed to share his life with his daughter, Jacqueline, whom he loved dearly. Together, he and Willa built a home rooted in love, faith, and family. They shared 51 beautiful years together until her passing, building a life filled with love, devotion, and cherished memories.
Bro. Jeremiah was a faithful member of New Faith Missionary Baptist Church, where he served with the Brotherhood Ministry and sang with the Male Chorus. He looked forward to worship each week and especially enjoyed the annual Men's Fashion Show, where every detail of his outfit was carefully coordinated, from his suit and tie to his matching shoes and hat, so he could be, as he would often say, "sharp as a tic."
Though reserved by nature, he possessed a calm, steady presence that brought comfort to those around him. Whether at work, at church, or at home, Andrew lived with quiet strength, humility, dignity, and unwavering consistency. He dedicated many years of faithful service to RockTenn before retiring, earning the respect of those around him through his dependable work ethic and steady character. He listened more than he spoke, and when he did speak, his words reflected thoughtfulness, wisdom, and sincerity.
Andrew was an early riser who valued routine. He liked to begin his days early and was usually ready to settle in for the night long before everyone else. He found peace sitting in his backyard, enjoying the stillness, and took great pride in caring for his yard and home. He believed that everything entrusted to him should be neat and well cared for, reflecting the care and discipline with which he lived his life. Whether going to church, running errands, or spending time with family, he was always well-dressed, well-groomed, and carried himself with quiet confidence.
Those closest to him knew there was much more behind his quiet demeanor. His silence was never empty; it was filled with kindness, observation, and a quiet humor reserved for the people he loved most. Although he was a man of few words, his humor often caught family and close friends by surprise. With a smirk and a slight shrug of his shoulders, he would simply say, "I'm just a funny man."
He enjoyed listening to music and faithfully looked forward to his Sunday phone calls with family in Grenada and beyond. Though miles apart, those conversations kept him connected to his roots and to the people he held dear. He led not with loud words, but by quiet example.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Willa R. Jeremiah; his parents, James ("Harry") Jeremiah and Emelda Alexandrina Jeremiah; his sisters, Phyllis Shears, Veronica R. ("Bedie"), and Helen ("Dreada"); and his brother, Roy Anthony Jeremiah.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Christopher Jeremiah (Trisha); his daughter, Jacqueline Morrow-Bennett (Walter); his grandchildren, Alexandra Jeremiah, Christian Jeremiah, and Christopher Jeremiah; his special grandchildren, Amaya Watkins, Kaliyah Garrett, Reggie Garrett, Kyndell Bean, and Jaylan Bean; his siblings, Evelyn Jeremiah and Stephen Jeremiah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends throughout the United States, Grenada, and Trinidad.
Andrew's life was a testament to faith, perseverance, integrity, hard work, and unwavering love. Though he was a man of few words, his life spoke with unmistakable clarity. He measured his days not by recognition or acclaim, but by faithfulness, kindness, quiet service, and love. His quiet strength, gentle spirit, and steadfast devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love him.
That is the quiet measure of Andrew I. Jeremiah
