Daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, godmother, comadre, sister-in-law, grandmother and mother-in-law; are some of the titles Antonia Izaguirre accumulated over a life that spanned 92 years and 11 months. A unique and unforgettable character that was able to earn the respect and affection of those who knew her. From her father, Donaciano Izaguirre, she inherited a charming personality and a social disposition that made her a great host. From her mother, Casimira Guerra, she inherited a formidable will, the propensity to think out loud and a sense of humor that was so natural that she displayed it without even trying. She was very intelligent and generous with her wisdom: She always had advice to give and it was impossible to fool her! After she married Francisco Medina, she would cook several times a day and always had food to offer their guests. Maybe that is why they always had visitors? She always enjoyed preparing the ingredients that she had selected. It hurt her deeply when she was no longer able to cook! Her children and family members are grateful to God that He blessed her with a long life and that he allowed her to rest when the suffering was unbearable.
Antonia was born July 5, 1932 in Buenavista, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She was the first and oldest of the 6 children born to Donaciano Izaguirre y Casimira Guerra. They would arrive at dawn; she would send them off to school and pick them up in the afternoon. At one point, she was taking care of 8 children at the same time. She took care of her grandchildren until she was no longer able to carry them!
Doña Antonia left a legacy of hard work, tremendous will power, humility and Deep Faith in God. She and her husband baptized over 30 godchildren! She was devoted to Our Lady of Carmel and Our Lady of Guadalupe. She prayed daily and always asked God to bestow his blessing upon her and her family. Maybe that is why she always found the strength to face the setbacks and tragedies of life? God always knows best, and God does not lose a soul; she would often say. When her body was failing her, she did not ask for medical attention, she asked to let the God’s Will be Done!
