Barbara Jean Warfield Baldwin passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas, on April 27, 2026, surrounded by loving family and friends in her final days. Barbara lived a life defined by creativity, intellectual curiosity, and enduring devotion to those she loved.
She was born on May 2, 1943, in Royal Oak, Michigan, and raised in Detroit. Her early years were followed by a formative chapter in New Orleans, where she developed a lasting appreciation for the culture and beauty of the South.
In New Orleans, she met her husband, John Baldwin. They married in 1964 and soon began a life of shared adventure, moving to Berlin, Germany, where John served in the United States Army. Their time abroad fostered a deep and abiding love of art, history, and travel—passions that would shape the course of Barbara’s life.
Upon returning to the United States, Barbara and John settled in Mendenhall, Mississippi, and later in Pineville, Louisiana, where they raised their three children, Amber, Heather, and Ben. During these years, Barbara pursued her academic and artistic ambitions, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a Master of Arts from Louisiana College.
Barbara distinguished herself as a mixed-media artist of notable talent, with work recognized nationally and internationally. For many years, she served as an artist-in-residence with the River Oaks Square art community in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was also the author of Dear Soldier, a compilation of letters written by children to American service members deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan—a reflection of her ability to connect art, empathy, and service.
In later years, Barbara and John made their home in Pontotoc, Mississippi, where they found great joy in their growing family and continued to travel extensively. They shared a particular love for Israel, returning often to the Middle East for study and mission work, building meaningful connections across cultures and faiths.
Following John’s death in 2016, Barbara moved to Edgemere in Dallas, Texas. There, she remained engaged in community life and formed treasured friendships that sustained and enriched her later years. She was grateful for her special friendship with Rebel Blackwell, whose companionship brought her so much joy.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Helen Warfield; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Baldwin; her sisters, Dr. Andrea Warfield and Dr. Dianne Hablitzel; sister-in-law, Tanya Sincox; and her beloved husband of more than fifty years, Col. Dr. John K. Baldwin.
She is survived by her children, Amber Baldwin D’Amico (Sammy) of Dallas, Texas; Dr. Heather Baldwin Duff (Marlin) of Pontotoc, Mississippi; and John Benjamin Baldwin (Jennifer) of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her brother, Dean Warfield (Judy) of Nashville, Tennessee; her brother-in-law, David Sincox of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren, Kellon Shackelford (Casey), Joshua Duff (Kaitlyn), John Baldwin, and Jack Baldwin; four great-grandchildren; and beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of The Plaza at Edgemere, Augustine Home Health Care, and Luminary Hospice for their compassion and attentive care.
A service will be held at Good Hope Primitive Baptist Church, Highway 541, Mendenhall, Mississippi, at 2:00 p.m. on May 9, 2026. Those attending are invited to wear cheerful colors in remembrance of Barbara’s vibrant spirit and enduring artistic legacy.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Hope Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Brother Wayne Shows, 110 Wayne’s Place, Mendenhall, Mississippi 39114, or to a charity of one’s choice.
