House in Texas after fighting a courageous and dignified battle with Alzheimer’s.
Barbara was born in 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Mary and Edward
Myers. After high school she moved to Terre Haute, Indiana and met and married her first
husband, William B. McCain. They enjoyed thirteen years together and had four boys
while moving often and enjoying many places in the United States. In her “spare time”
while raising four boys she enjoyed playing golf and attending musicals . In December of
1969 after returning to Terre Haute, William, an executive with Eastern Express Trucking
at the time, died unexpectedly. Barb carried on and remained in Terre Haute and
remarried in December of 1971 to Walter W. Gray. He was a professor at Indiana State
University, a former coach and also a widower with four sons. Together they raised eight
boys who all graduated from various colleges in Indiana and Georgia…No small
accomplishment.
Barb was an extremely active person her whole life. She worked for many years of her
life at Eastern Express Trucking and later at the AP&S Clinic. She enjoyed many sporting
events at Indiana University and Indiana State University. She was a Cardinals fan. She
was an avid reader, bridge player and loved walking. Her favorite place to spend time
was at the beach, which is where she and Walter retired to in Melbourne, Florida. She
was a volunteer at the Kennedy Space Center and a docent at the Foosaner Art Museum.
She always had the cookie jar full for visits from family. Snickerdoodles were her
specialty. She loved decorating for every holiday and did it beautifully. Her enthusiasm,
optimism, smile and warm beautiful blue eyes will be greatly missed. Not to mention her
laugh.
Barbara is survived by her four children Mike, John, Frank and Tom McCain and their
wives and families. Also by her four stepsons Butch, Gary, Pete and Chip Gray and their
wives and families. She was very proud of all her boys and loved all her “sugar bear”
grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she felt very lucky to have so many. She is
also survived by her sister, Mary Heckel, and brother, Frank Myers who she loved dearly
all her life even over the miles.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Barb’s memory be made to the
