Betsy Garvey

Elizabeth Jane “Betsy” Latimer Garvey died on Wednesday the 27th of November 2013 surrounded by family. Betsy was born May 30, 1929 in Luling, Texas to Leone Heins Latimer and J. L. “Slatz” Latimer. After moving to Dallas she graduated from Merici High School, now Ursuline Academy. She attended the University of Texas and Southern Methodist University.

August 18, 1951 she married Skip Garvey. She turned her considerable patience and generosity of spirit towards raising their 4 children. Betsy was well known around their schools as a volunteer whenever needed. Whatever her kids were involved in, she was too. She was very active in various charity and volunteer organizations as well as St. Rita Catholic Church. She loved to travel, in later years with her long-time partner in crime, Rita Maher, and her sister Peggy Begien.

She is survived by her children Leslie Hansen (Bob), Ronald F. Garvey, Jr., James T. (Tim) Garvey and Tracey Dunham. The grandchildren she loved so much include Jennifer Garvey Lee (Tommy), James T. Garvey, Jr. (Nancy), John L. Garvey (Kelly), Dr. Robert “Trey” Hansen (Portia), Tristan Hansen, Laura Garvey Fosson (James), Frank Garvey, Michael J. Dunham,Jr, and Brandy Dunham. She was a loving “Meemaw “ to her 7 awesome great-grandchildren as well.

There will be a rosary at St. Rita Catholic Church, 12521 Inwood Road, Dallas, TX on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on December 7, 2013 at noon in the North Chapel of Calvary Hill, 3235 Lombardy Lane, Dallas, TX.

The family is extremely grateful to caregivers Anna and Rita for the loving care they gave her during the last weeks of her life.
