Bettye confessed her faith as a teenager and joined Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church in Waxahachie, Texas, more than sixty years ago. A faithful and devoted member, she served on the Usher Board, warmly welcoming all who came to worship. She also served in the culinary ministry, preparing her award-winning fried chicken and other delicious dishes for the congregation and guests.
Bettye’s servant heart reflected her deep commitment to family, friends, and church. In her younger years, she cherished her work as a nanny, though caring for a child who ate peanut butter and banana sandwiches every day left her with a lasting dislike for bananas. That experience eventually led her to seek new employment, and she went on to work at the Veterans Administration Hospital on Lancaster Road in Dallas, Texas, where she remained until retirement.
While Bettye was employed, both of her parents became seriously ill and later passed away. Almost overnight, she became the caregiver and guardian for her three younger siblings. Though the circumstances were difficult, she never complained. She persevered through long hospital hours while faithfully fulfilling her responsibilities as a wife and mother.
After more than forty years of service, Bettye retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital at age 65. Though she said, “The old girl is tired,” her retirement was also driven by a desire to spend more time with her youngest son, Patrick, and his six children, who ranged in age from 8 months to 9 years. She continued to play an important role in her grandchildren’s lives, supporting them through graduations, college, military service, and the arrival of her great-grandchildren.
Bettye’s accomplishments and life story cannot be fully captured in words. Her love as a daughter, wife, mother, sister, guardian, grandmother, and great-grandmother was unmatched. We honor her selfless spirit and, in this time of separation, cherish her memory with both sorrow and gratitude.

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:1-3-KJV)
