92 happy years, and peacefully passed away on August 19, 2021 with her daughters by her side.
Betty is predeceased by a brother, Bobby Joe Craig, whom she dearly loved. When they were children, Betty and Bobby had a paint pony named Peaches. Betty fondly remembered they rode Peaches to a
nearby creek and gave him baths. Betty and Bobby also loved to roller skate. She laughed when she remembered that, while they both had skates, they only had one skate key. It was, afterall, the Great
Depression.
Betty didn’t have sisters, but she adopted all the girls in the Stein family as sisters. She was best friends with Delores and thought the older sister, Mary Ona, was the bee’s knees. When the Stein family
had babies, Olivia and Ruby Jo, Betty was over-the-moon happy to hold and play with them.
Betty was several years younger than William Henry (Bill) Stein, but when he came back from WWII, the age difference had become insignificant. They married on April 4, 1947. Bill’s brother, Harold, brought his new girlfriend, Billie Vaughn, to the wedding (she would later become his wife). Billie Vaughn and Betty became great friends and were closer than most sisters throughout their lives. Their relationship was beautiful. There was always lots of laughter when they were together. People teased they were just like Lucy and Ethel. Bill and Betty, and Harold and Billie Vaughn made their first homes next door to one another. A few years later, they started their families. We could write a book about their escapades.
Bill and Betty were happily married until his death in 1991.They were the loves of each other’s lives. They enjoyed taking vacations. They packed up and left the house with no particular plans - only a general
direction in mind. Many times, part of the fun included taking a new car on the road. They also loved to go to area lakes. At least once a week, Betty fried chicken and packed it up with potato salad, all the fixings, and a big jar of sweet tea. Bill hooked up the boat, and off they went with family and friends. They would ski and picnic all day.
Betty graduated from Adamson High School in Dallas. She completed Cosmetology School, received a beautician license and a degree to teach cosmetology. She taught cosmetology at Dallas Independent
School District. Later, she was a hairdresser at the kind of salon where the stylists were family, and the clients were friends. There, Betty met her lifelong friend, Mary Guerra. Betty became godmother to Mary’s
son, Ernest.
Bill and Betty had two daughters, Linda Ann Stein Stokley and Charlott Leah Stein Combs. Betty was a loving mother to them both and a wonderful mother-in-law to their husbands, Donald Ray Stokley
and Kenneth R. Combs. Betty was Gran to William Craig Stokley (Craig), Kathryn Lindsey Stokley Blevins (Katie), Thomas Bradley Combs (Brad), Kari Elizabeth Combs Mize and Victoria Jean Combs
McFadin (Tori); and Great Gran (Gigi) to William Henry Stokley (Will), Nicholas Reid Stokley, Charlie Nathan Blevins, Emilie Brooke Blevins, Catherine Renee Combs, Henry Allen Mize, Kenneth Michael Mize (Kenny), Finley Kate McFadin and Thomas Jackson Combs (Tommy). Betty’s grandchildren and great grandchildren hold a special place in their hearts for her.
While she was living, Betty donated every month to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. St. Jude was very important to her. If you feel it in your heart, please donate to the Betty Stein Memorial fund at:
