

Carl was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on November 3, 1930, to Eduard and Tilly Schwalm. He grew up in the Netherlands and lived through lived through the German invasion and occupation during the Second World War. After the war he attended school in England, and then his family came to the United States in 1949 and settled in Dallas, where he became a citizen of the United States in 1955. He graduated from Southern Methodist University and continued to receive a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Southern Methodist University. Carl was married to Mary on November 17, 1961; they were married 36 years, until her passing in 1997. Since his wife’s passing, he has continued to live in the same house they moved into shortly after getting married, having lived there for a total of 64 years with his wife and then his sons.
Carl worked as a quality control engineer for LTV Corporation (through several company names) on the Scout rocket program for 35 years from 1959 to 1994. He enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts in the 1980s and helping as a church usher after retirement, he also had hobbies in photography, home aquarium, modal trains, computers and in his later years regular water walking sessions at the YMCA. Carl and his family were received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1984, and they have been actively involved with their current parish, Mater Dei, in Irving, Texas, since its establishment as parish in 2010, and with the community since it began in 1991.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Carl is survived by his four sons, Michael, Davis, Theodore and Hans, daughter-in-law Martha, four grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Maryanne and Sophie, and his brother-in-law George D. Nash, Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, and other family and friends.
Visitation will be held on October 6, 2026 from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Calvary Hill Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be held on October 7, 2026 at 8:30 am at Mater Dei Catholic Church, 2030 East State Hwy 356, Irving, Texas. Committal will follow at Calvary Hill Cemetery at 10:45 am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carl’s memory may be made to the Moody Park Cities YMCA.
