Carmen Reyes, age 91, passed away on July 10, 2026. Born in Waxahachie, Tx, on October 26, 1934, Carmen was one of eight children born to Florentina Gomez Herrera and Teodoro Herrera. She graduated from Crozier Tech High School, and in the years that followed, her life would be shaped by steadfast devotion to family, quiet strength, and a generosity expressed most often through simple, faithful acts of care.
Sometime after high school, Carmen attended a dance where she met the love of her life, Jose R Reyes—a handsome, funny, outgoing man. Together they made a striking couple, and their love grew into a marriage that began in 1955 and endured with constancy and grace. Carmen and Joe shared 67 years of marriage and raised four children: Lawrence, Joe, Victor, and Rosie.
Carmen worked at Republic Bank in downtown Dallas until her baby daughter Rosie was born. After that, she dedicated herself fully to her home and family and did not return to work outside the home. Her hard work was not measured by titles or schedules, but by the steady, lifelong labor of love that filled her days—raising her children and, in time, helping care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gentle in manner and generous in spirit, she was a quiet person who did not need many words; her helpful actions spoke clearly for her, and her presence brought comfort to those around her.
To many, Carmen’s care was felt in the warmth of her table. Whether or not she would have called cooking a hobby, those who loved her knew her as the best cook, remembered for making favorite meals that drew family close. And there was a particular joy that never faded: going out to eat at the CharCo-Broiler Steakhouse on Jefferson Ave.—her face would light up when she knew she was headed there for lunch or dinner.
Carmen is preceded in death by her parents, Florentina Gomez Herrera and Teodoro Herrerra; brothers, Santos Herrera and Frank Herrera; sisters, Andrea Medeles and Margaret Soria; and grandson, Jason Reyes. She is survived by her children Lawrence Reyes, Jose Reyes, Victor Reyes (wife Jani), and Rose Rivas (husband Danny); grandchildren Elizabeth Sauceda (husband Robert), Jennifer Patton (husband Branef), Natalie Reyes, Jonathon Reyes (wife Fabiola), Daniel Rivas (wife Joselyn), and Andrew Rivas (wife Lili); twelve great grandchildren; and five great, great grandchildren.
Carmen was a good wife, mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor, and friend—honest and loyal, selfless and thoughtful. She never spoke an ill word about anyone, and she was loved by many for the calm goodness she carried into everyday life.
