Carolyn Louise Post (Carol) Spies, a 45 year resident of Dallas, was born February 5, 1938, and passed into the hands of the Lord on August 5, 2015, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Donald, her four sons, John and his fiancé, Bobbi, of Durango, CO, Robert and his wife, Mindy, of Sacramento, CA, Richard and his wife Sabrina, of Argyle, TX, and James of Kansas City, KS, and her six grandchildren, Ashley, Sydney, Steele, Emily, Nikki, and Luke. She was preceded in Death by her parents Helen and Wilmarth Post and her sister, Margaret. Upon her sister’s death, Carol became surrogate mother for her sister’s four children, Tom, Jennifer, Steve, and Dave and their families.
Carol graduated from Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education and received an Associate degree in Nursing in 1978 from El Centro Community College. At Western Reserve she was a member of the Sigma Psi local sorority, Phi Upsilon Omicron Society, and member of the Home Economics Club. Along with her then fiancé, Donald, she was also a journalist for the college newspaper. Carol retired in 1996 from nursing after 18 years at Medical City Dallas, where she had been a recovery room volunteer for four years before attending nursing school.
Often referred to as “The Energizer Bunny” by family and friends, Carol was full of joy, enthusiasm, and energy. Carol was always impeccably attired and never without a smile. Carol was a member of the DAR, Northwood Woman’s Club and Dallas Woman’s Club, where she was also a member of the Marianne Scruggs Garden Club. She was an active member of the Crystal Charity Ball for 18 years where she served in many different leadership roles, most notable, Chairman of the Children’s book. Carol’s volunteer/community activities are too long to list but included the Northwood Hills Elementary School PTA, Dallas Museum of Art League, March of Dimes Women’s Auxiliary, Dallas Ballet Women’s Auxiliary, Grand Heritage Ball, National Kidney Foundation Women’s Auxiliary, DABS Women’s Council, Dallas Opera Women’s Board, Dallas Symphony Orchestra League, Dallas Summer Musicals Board of Directors, TACA, Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, and on and on. In the past four years she became an avid Mah-Jongg player and loved the game and the friends she made from her various Mah-Jongg groups.
Carol was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, served on the Administrative Board, and was a member of the Wesleyan Fellowship Class. Most recently she served, along with her husband, in the role of communications and publicity coordinator for this class. Her joyful presence and her fine editing and proofreading skills will be a loss.
Of all the things she has done, Carol was most proud of her four sons, and their families, and what they have accomplished. The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to New Century Hospice for their loving comfort and care. A Memorial Service at Highland Park Methodist Church will be at 10:30 AM on August 28, so that her family members from across the country can be available for the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to be made to the Wesleyan Fellowship Class Benevolence Fund, Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas 75205.
