Castomal Alexander, Sr. was born on March 18, 1931, in Austin, Texas, to Gilmore Alexander and Lucille Hall. He attended Anderson High School, where he was an extraordinary student. With a studious and naturally brilliant mind, he was placed in two class levels above his age. During high school, he was a member of the band, where he loved to play the trombone. He later attended Samuel Huston College (Huston-Tillotson University), where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and played trombone in the college jazz band.
Castomal began his career as a teacher and band director after college graduation. He then entered the Army, where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on April 13, 1956. After the Military, he worked for the Federal Government. He became the first African American to hold the position of Computer Operation Division Chief of the Social Security Administration. He retired from this position shortly before his move to Dallas, Texas.
Castomal married his loving wife of over 30 years, Billie, in 1987. Cas and Billie’s love and commitment to one another was unconditional and special. He and Billie were active members of St. Luke Presbyterian Church of Dallas for many years. He was an ordained Elder who served in the Session of the church.
Castomal’s favorite pass time after retirement was watching football and basketball games on television in his “big chair” at home. He enjoyed making picks and betting on NFL football games with his family and buddies. He had fun spending time at the Oak Cliff YMCA with his exercise buddies. He took pride in being a block captain for the Wynnewood Hills Neighborhood Association. He loved talking to and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching old western films and gameshows, in particular Family Feud, with his wife right by his side.
