Sandy was born April 14, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Harold H Cabe and Sara Jane “Lucy” Lockett Cabe.
He is survived by his daughter Christen Leigh Cabe and husband Eric Elledge, granddaughter Evalynn Elledge of Austin, Texas, and his brother Thomas “Tom” Cabe and wife Cindy Bass Cabe of Dallas, Texas.
Sandy was born in St. Louis, Missouri while his father was overseas in World War II. Soon after his father’s return, the family moved to Gurdon, Arkansas where his father owned and ran the Gurdon Lumber Company for many years.
Sandy played football for the mighty Gurdon “Go Devil” football team. For the less learned, a “Go Devil” is a piece of logging equipment, not the spirit of evil. Sandy’s high school friends recall that he seemed to prefer working on his ’32 Ford “Deuce Coupe” hot rod, as opposed to 2-a-day football practices in August. Notably, Sandy preceded “Fonzy” with their trademark black leather jackets and “Duck-Tails.”
Sandy enrolled at Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1960, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1965. He then attended the University of Texas in Austin where he received his master’s degree in business in 1967.
On graduating, he went to work for International Business Machines where he worked for many years. He subsequently retired to take care of his personal investments, and most importantly, to spend more time with family. He enjoyed flying his own airplane and spending many summers at a family summer home at Epworth Heights in Ludington, Michigan.
There was one memorable day when he and his brother flew to Arkansas on a snowy December day to spend Christmas with their parents. The flight unfortunately ended in an adjacent field where the two executed a near-perfect upside-down landing. Lucy cried out: “Oh Harold, they’ve crashed.” to which Harold responded in his indomitable way: “Oh hush Lucy, they just hit some water and skidded.”
Luckily the airplane was a smaller single-engine model. Of equal good fortune, his many other flights ended without incident. Sandy is now on his final flight.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Sandy Cabe will be held in the chapel at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home located at 7405 W Northwest Hwy in Dallas at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 9, 2023. This will be followed by a reception at the same location.
Sandy wishes were to be cremated, and memorialized with his parents at Sparkman/Hillcrest.
Memorial Donations may be made to Young Life of Dallas, Texas or to the Epworth Assembly at Epworth Heights in Ludington, Michigan.
