Charles Douglas Hudson “Chuck” was born in Abilene, Texas on May 7, 1954 to Joan and Winston Hudson. As a boy he was active in Elmwood West Methodist Church and any sport that involved a ball of any shape or size, as well as the cinder track. At Cooper High School, he was a 3-year, 3 sport letterman, loved participating in speech and drama, and was most proud of being chosen one of the outstanding high school English students in the nation by the National Council of Teachers of English. As a senior he was captain of the Cooper Cougar football team and for three years played “both ways”, quarterback and safety, leading his team to the State High School Playoffs. He attended Rice University on a football scholarship, but, disillusioned by college football, he transferred to the University of Texas, where he received a B.B.A. in May of 1976 and was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Dallas, where he was an Elder, a Sunday School teacher of all levels of classes, a youth sponsor and proudly held the title of “Dean of Sex” by teaching the church’s sex ed curriculum for many years. He was a true man of faith.
He loved being a referee for school basketball throughout Dallas County, until his health prevented continuing. He loved to attend plays and art museums. He was a great storyteller, had a marvelous sense of humor, and was a warrior competitor and a loyal teammate.
Most important, he was a fierce and loving father.
He fought a valiant 12-1/2 year battle with kidney cancer, only succumbing when his powerful athlete’s body and will just decided the strife was over. His courage, faith and resilience were tested over and over, and were never found lacking.
The family wishes to particularly thank Dr. Thomas Hutson and Dr. Scott Cheek of Texas Oncology Baylor for their friendship and care over these many years, and also Dr. Robert Fine, Palliative Care, for his graciousness to our entire family in the last days.
Chuck is survived by his loving and lucky wife, Joan Tibbets Hudson, children Nora (Will) Clark, Caitlyn (Mike) Fantl, and Andrew (Jenna) Hudson, three grandchildren, Grayson and Mae Clark, and Hannah Hudson, his father Winston Hudson, sister and brother-in-law Jolynn and Gregory Free, and niece Shay Hoffman and her son Avram.
A memorial service will be held Monday August 20, at 3:00pm at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas, 1835 Young Street. There is free parking in the adjoining church garage.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Foundation at the church address or to Mo-Ranch, 2229 FM 1340, Hunt, Texas 78024.
