Christel M Culbertson
November 12, 1942 – February 8, 2020
Christel Jattke Culbertson of Dallas, TX passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2020, in the Presbyterian Hospital of Plano. Born November, 12, 1942, in Breslau, Germany, she was the daughter of Paul and Marta (Senner) Jattke. Christel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 39 years, Ray R. Culbertson, brother Dietmar Jattke, and step son-in-law Ray Martin. She will be immensely missed by her only child, Kathrine Culbertson Tolsch (Edward), grandchildren Jason and Ryan Tolsch and brother, Peter Jattke (Christa) and a nephew and two nieces. She is also survived by her stepdaughter Kay Capels Martin, Kay’s children Johnny Ray Capels (Renee) and Candy Capels Perry and their children, Corey Capels, Matthias Capels, Chris Perry, Corey Perry and Taylor Perry.
When Christel married her husband in March of 1964 in Wolfsburg, Germany, she never thought she would be moving to the United States. But in 1968, Ray brought Christel and their 4 year-old daughter, Kathrine to Houston, Texas. Christel did not speak English and learned the language by watching soap operas. While devoting herself to being a mother and wife, she also assisted her husband throughout the years in his many business ventures as a part-time bookkeeper and office manager. She traveled with Ray across the country, living in various cities and towns as his business dictated. She provided immeasurable support and was an advocate for her daughter, Kathrine, encouraging her to go to college and be an independent woman. She adored her grandsons; Jason and Ryan and loved being their “Oma” and baby sitter when they were young. Christel maintained her relationships with her German family and shared the culture and food with family members here. She was an animal lover and over the years had many dogs as pets that filled her life. Her poodle, Sadie, a shining star in her life, survives her and will now become a member of the Tolsch family.
