Claria Lee Morgan was born on January 14, 1927. She was the second child of four children born to the union of Harbert and Lurenzia Allen in the small community called Piney Creek located in the Southeast Texas town of Mt. Pleasant. She knew at a very early age that education would be the vehicle she would use to leave this small community for the big city. Growing up in the Allen’s household, her parents instilled in her the passion to be a life long learner and to love God with all her heart. At the age of nine, she joined the Piney Creek Baptist Church in 1936. She immediately became involved in the Starlight Band, Sunday School, BTU and Choir.
After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in Mt. Pleasant, she attended Prairie View A&M
College for one year and transferred to Jarvis Christian College for the remaining three years. While at Jarvis, she met the love of her life, Armond Morgan. She received her undergraduate degree from Jarvis Christian College and her M.E. Degree from the University of North Texas.
In 1951, she was given the opportunity to teach at Wilmer Hutchins School District. Mrs. Morgan came equipped with enthusiasm, practical teaching training and a heart to see children excited about learning. Her career in the District spanned 41 years. She had an excellent track record for working with and refocusing students who had been labeled with learning disabilities, because she felt that no child is beyond learning. As a teacher she was very involved:
» Served as Grade Level Chairperson
» Organized and presented workshops
» Served on strategic educational committees
» Served with a team of curriculum writers
» Chosen as Teacher of the Year in 1982
» Member of the Textbook Adoption Committee
Mrs. Morgan was an exceptional educator, who never stopped acquiring new learning tools—attending seminars, workshops, reading books, conversing with other educators—whatever the medium, she exposed herself to different learning venues for the sake of the children. Presenting hope to children can truly be the turning point for a brighter tomorrow. This is Mrs. Morgan’s gift of love to her students and the legacy that will live on forever.
As much as Mrs. Morgan loved being an educator, she loved her Lord and Savior more. Her spiritual growth and walk with the Lord was truly important to her. She joined Romine Avenue Christian Church on July 1, 1951 under Rev. R. L. Searcy and remained a devoted and faithful member until her death. Her church involvement included:
» Primary Sunday School Teacher
» Study Directors of CWF
» Member of the Senior Choir (40+ years)
» President of CWF
» Secretary of CWF (Christian Woman’s Fellowship)
» Chairperson of the Diaconate
» Worship Director of CWF
» Historian of the Church
» Began the first tape ministry for sick and shut-in members
