Ed was born in Danville, Virginia on April 30, 1942 to Claude Edward Dawson and Nellie McGregor Dawson. He graduated from Chatham High School and continued to receive a Master’s from University of North Carolina. Ed was married to Adelle Frances Mary Schmalzried Dawson; they were married 59 years.
Claude worked as a professor for Cedar Valley College for 20 years. He enjoyed music, food from many different cuisines (both eating and cooking), the Mayan civilization, Mexican culture, and the Civil War. He was also actively involved in the YMCA.
Ed is preceded in death by Nellie Dawson (mother), Claude Edward Dawson (father), Adelle Dawson (wife), Faye Proffitt (sister), and Freddie Dawson (brother).
Ed is survived by Rebecca Dawson (daughter), Claude Dawson (son), Natasha Goushey (granddaughter), Sarah Goushey (granddaughter), Bethany Goushey (granddaughter), Lee Dawson (brother), Paige Conner (niece), Kevin Dawson (nephew), Jenny Eaton (niece), Shauna Fanin (niece), Bill Proffitt (nephew), Rusty Proffitt), Elizabeth Conner (grandniece), Brittany Shelton (grandniece), Blair Lumpkins (grandniece), Grayson Eaton (grandnephew), Trey Proffitt (grandnephew), Lauryn Proffitt (grandniece), Jonathan Proffitt (grandnephew) and other family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Calvary Hill Funeral Home, 3235 Lombardy Ln, Dallas, Texas 75220, on October 5, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:00 am on October 6, 2026. Committal will follow at Calvary Hill Mausoleum at 10:00 am.
