Ruth grew up in Dallas spending most of her early days at her “Grama’s Café” across the street from the State Fair of Texas. She was an amazing and talented roller skater. Spending many hours on the rolling-rink at the State Fair of Texas in the early 40’s where she met Lou and was married at the age of 17.
Widowed at 41 years old, Ruth moved her 4 children to the Lake Highlands area and remained there until her death on September 3, 2016.
Ruth enjoyed her home and loved to work in the yard on the weekends. Her vacations were always a special time, as she would load up the car and take the children to Galveston and San Antonio every year. For many years she enjoyed her trips to Keller’s hamburger with her children for a cold Lone Star beer.
Ruth retired from Southern Pacific Cotton Belt Railroad and also from the Dallas County Jail Services. In addition, Ruth also worked at Sterling Jewelers for many years.
At the age of 73 she learned how to use a computer and would spend hours playing her POGO games and would keep track of her earned points….(like she was going to win the Lottery or something.) She loved to sit by her back patio door and feed the squirrels. They would come right up to her and take the nuts out of her hand. Even the past few months of her life, she enjoyed sitting outside in the back yard, soaking up the sun and listening to the birds.
It goes without saying that her loyal and loving caregiver Mrs. Annie Kaunda was a blessing as our Nana battled her disease. Her dedication and attention to detail was that of perfection. Her faithfulness and the way she breathed the Lords spirit every day she cared for her, was something of beauty and grace.
