Cruz Ochoa Tamez, 76, entered eternal life on Sunday, January 15, 2017. She was born on May 3, 1940 to the late Guillermo Diaz Ochoa and Angelita Guanajuato in Bay City, Texas. She married the love of her life, Jesus Tamez on September 18, 1957. They were married 59 wonderful years. They celebrated their 50th anniversary with family and friends with a huge dinner and dance. Cruz was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bay City where they were married. When the family moved to Dallas, they attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help in North Dallas and later St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Cruz and Jesus moved to Dallas the summer of 1966 with 5 children. Two daughters were later born in Dallas. Cruz worked at Western Electric, Eckerd Pharmacy, and Dallas Independent School District. She coached the girls’ soccer team while at Florence Middle School. She later worked in the counselor’s office at North Dallas High School.
Cruz developed a passion for many sports. She started to play adult women’s soccer on the team “Just for Kicks” and continued playing for over 30 years. Nicknamed as the “Cruz Missile”, she often played on Sunday’s occasionally joined by her daughters and granddaughters. She was loved by many on her team as well as opposing teams. She kept up with Little League Baseball, High School and College football. It was not unusual to see her spend all day at Texas Stadium on a Saturday watching the high school playoffs. She loved the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Baylor College had a special place in her sports heart especially proud of her grandson Jeremy, who played for Baylor.
Her sense of adventure took her to many places around the world and she looked forward to traveling. Whether it was going to London, Italy, or jetting off to Hawaii, she rarely said no to a trip. She loved the beach and was usually the first one in the water, playing in the waves with the kids and grandkids. Cruz never met a stranger, she could walk up to anyone and strike up a conversation.
