

David was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Rose Gerstein, and his sister, Toby Scott. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Fern DeWoskin Gerstein; his brother, Harvey Gerstein; his loving children, Angie Stewart, Elaine (Larry) Montoya, Jason (Becca) Gerstein, and Jami (Dunagin) Gaines; and his cherished grandchildren, Cheyenne Montoya, Breanna Rogers, Madison Stewart, Farrah Montoya, Jasper Gerstein, Mason Gerstein, Ellison Gaines, Jamison Gaines, and Sami Gaines.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1945, David graduated from University City High School in 1963 before attending the Culinary Institute of America. He proudly served in the Army Reserve for more than 20 years while also building a distinguished career as a Food Service Supervisor for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
David was a true Renaissance man whose talents, wisdom, and generosity touched every aspect of his life. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to his family, his congregation, and his community, leaving a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering dedication. He will be remembered for his love of learning, his commitment to helping others, and the lasting impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home & Memorial Park, (7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225), followed by a graveside service.
A Shiva Minyan will be held that evening at 7:00 p.m. at Congregation Beth Torah, (720 W. Lookout Drive, Richardson, TX 75080).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in David's memory may be made to Congregation Beth Torah's Men's Club or The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
