He died peacefully at his home in Justin with his devoted wife and children by his side.
David was a passionate man who loved working on cars, cooking steaks for his friends and family, and delivering jokes at every opportunity. He was a lifelong fan of the Texas Rangers, who he recently saw win the World Series, and of the State Fair of Texas, where he frequently spent more money each year than most would spend over a weekend in Las Vegas.
David was born in Mesquite, Texas in 1953 to Betty Jo and Harold Herbert Wilson. He spent his youth in Mesquite with his brother John before embarking upon a career in the U.S. Armed Forces that would take him to every corner of the world in service of his country.
His service led him to a series of great adventures and eventually set him on a collision course with the greatest adventure of his life: his 25-year marriage to his wife and soul mate Marcy.
Marcy followed and supported David across continents and time zones, always providing the home he needed in a lifetime of travels. She never wavered in her duty to him, as he never wavered in his love and admiration for her. Everyone in his life could easily see how he loved her, especially when he donned his favorite hat, which had “Marcy’s Man” in bold script above the brim.
He retired from the military in 2009 at the rank of Colonel, having overseen untold numbers of men and women in uniform in every corner of the world, including the Americas, the Middle East, and Europe.
Following his retirement, he settled in Justin, Texas, where he continued to serve his community as a member of the city council and economic development corporation, along with a three-year stint as Mayor from 2015 through 2018.
He received his last and greatest promotion to the rank of “Pow Pow” when his first grandchild was born in 2012. The job became increasingly complex as his five children, Matthew, Melissa, Michael, Mark, and Lauren added to the ranks up until January 2024, providing 12 grandchildren who constantly filled his home with laughter and joy in his final years.
David’s life and legacy are stories of love, adventure, and growth. He instilled in his children a love of each other, of service, and God.
He will be sorely missed by everyone who shared in his journey, and his legacy will live on through the family he built, nourished, and loved.
A visitation for David will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Saturn Road Church of Christ, 3030 Saturn Rd, Garland, TX 75041, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
