Dewey was born on May 20, 1932, in Jasper Texas to Dewey and Dorothy Godfrey. He was raised in Dallas until his family moved to Fairfield, Connecticut in 1946 where he graduated from Ludlowe High School. His love for Texas brought him back in 1950 to attend Southern Methodist University graduating with a BBA in Mgmt/Marketing. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and maintained many of those friendships throughout his life. While at SMU Dewey met Jane Burbank Chambers and they married in 1955.
After college Dewey worked for his family in Jasper and Kilgore, then Magnolia Petroleum, and Angelina Hardware before going to work for Remington Arms in 1962, only after his father retired from the company. He spent 30 years working as a sales rep and Rocky Mountain Regional Manager before retiring as SW Regional Manager. He loved his job and the many shoots and hunts to which it took him. In 1992 Dewey went to work for Murski-Breeding Sales as a firearms specialist, a company he loved and thought of as family.
Dewey was a member of the TSSA and Park Cities Quail as well as a lifetime member of the NRA and NSSA and his beloved Dallas Gun Club to which he devoted many years of serving on the Board of Directors in various offices and in which made many life time friends.
If he wasn’t attending a shoot or trade show Dewey spent his free time at his farm in Van Alstyne, Texas working the land and attending to livestock. He felt a great connection to God’s creation there and loved sitting in his truck or on the tractor just soaking in God’s sunshine. He felt a great peace being in the country.
Dewey was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife, his brother Charles B. Godfrey, and granddaughter Annabelle Baker. He is survived by daughter Laura Travis (Kyle) of Tulsa, daughter Nancy Coury (Steve) of Lake Oswego, OR, son Dewey C. Godfrey of Tulsa, sister Sue Godfrey Gregory (Wes) of Falmouth, Mass., cousin Flo Olivier of Austin, TX., 7 beloved grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
