Don W. Turner Sr.

January 1, 1922March 28, 2019

Turner, Don Winston, 97, passed away on March 28, 2019 in Dallas. Don was born on New Year’s Day 1922 to Mary Lemma (Oakes) and Miles Benson Turner. The youngest of three children, Don was raised in Bluff Dale, TX and was an athlete and honors student at Breckenridge High School. After attending one semester at Tarleton, he felt called to serve his country in 1941, just before the U.S. entered WWII. As a mechanic in the Army Air Corps, he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands—many years later, he delighted in telling stories about driving across the frozen Bering Strait in an Army jeep. In 1942, while stationed in Baton Rouge, LA, he met Margie Green, then a senior at LSU. They married February 5, 1943 and were soon reassigned to Lakeland, FL. Their son Don, Jr. (“Tom”) was born in 1944 and, following a move to Dallas, their son John Michael (“Mike”) was born in 1952. Don continued working as a mechanic and owned the longtime Dallas institution Mustang Service Center on Hillcrest across from the SMU campus. Don was a charter member of Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church, serving on many committees over the years. Weekends were spent hunting, fishing, or working at his beloved Union Valley Ranch. He was a loving husband and father, a hard-working businessman and rancher, and a generous and trusted friend.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Janie Belle (Doyle) Graves and Mary Ruth (Don) Rockett, and his nephews Ray Graves, Kay Graves, and Drew Curtis. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Margie, and sons Tom (Marti) Turner and Mike (Patty) Turner; grandchildren Barbara (Tim) Powell, Todd Turner, Anne Turner and Alison Turner, great-grandchildren Lauren Turner, Keegan Turner and Dillon Powell; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, friends, and neighbors. Don’s family would like to thank April Howard, the staff at the Villages of Lake Highlands, and the team at Seasons Hospice Care for their kindness and caring during Don’s illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church Building Fund.

Don Turner... he was the best neighbor anyone could ever ask for. I will miss him so much. I learned more from this 97 yr old couple than I could have ever imagined. They shared so many stories with us, loved on us, cooked for us, shared recipes, taught me how to grill, bake, and most importantly how to be a good neighbor. ❤️ Their door was always open to our family. You could always find Don sitting on the patio, Chivas in hand and inviting us to come have a beer that he stocked specifically for me. (He made regular trips to Goody Goody. 😂) He made the best steaks! Don always had a good story to share that usually ended up with us all in tears. I loved this man as if he was my own family. He will be greatly missed. 💔😭
