Doris Cohen Levine died peacefully surrounded by family on April 26, 2017, after a lengthy illness. Born in Oklahoma City on October 24, 1930, she grew up in Altus, Oklahoma, with her parents, Norman and Esther Cohen and her brother, Leonard Morton (Esther). She graduated from the University of Oklahoma and was very active at O.U., she was president of her sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, and remained a Sooner fan throughout her life. After graduation, she worked briefly in Kansas City before moving to Dallas to become a buyer at Neiman-Marcus. She married Sol Levine and his three children in 1957, jokingly reporting that she began driving carpools the day they returned from their honeymoon. They added two more children to the family, so carpooling continued for many years. Joining her husband, Sol, she became active in many civic and Jewish causes in Dallas, serving as head of the Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation. As her children grew older, she and Sol traveled extensively, and they took their family on many fun and educational vacations. Family remained the most important thing throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sol, and her daughter, Janis Levine Music. She is survived by children, Sharon Levine Ross, Sonia Levine Goldberg (Robert), Mindi Levine Kahn (Michael), Mike Levine along with her 11 grandchildren, Jon Ross (Kimberly), Kevin Ross, Joey Music Daniel (Josh), Josh Music (Jodi), Sara Music Dorfman (Todd), Jaclyn Goldberg, Alyson Goldberg Kieso (Greg), David Goldberg (Stefanie), Brady Kahn, Jana Kahn, Sally Levine, her 15 great-grandchildren, Shane Ross, Sterling Ross, Stratton Ross, Jennie Ross, Aiden Ross, Shayna Daniel, Ryan Daniel, Ivy Daniel, Maya Music, Tess Music, Jake Dorfman, Justin Dorman, Charlie Kieso, Ellie Goldberg, and Jenna Goldberg, and her many nieces and nephews. She was fortunate to have had several loving caregivers whom her family wishes to thank, among them Bethlehem Gobena, Kelera Bulai, Hirut Abebe, Catrina Williams, and Abigail Kabali. Services will be held Friday, April 28, at 1PM at Congregation Shearith Israel followed by interment at Shearith Israel Cemetery on Dolphin Rd. To mark her memory, donations may be made to the Janis Levine Music Women and Children’s Fund of the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation at www.djcf.org, to Congregation Shearith Israel, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
