

Mrs. J. McCarty Dowell, Jr., the former Doris Allen, died in her home, May 2, 2018. Born in Dallas on March 26, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Kent D. Allen, also of Dallas. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, J. McCarty Dowell, Jr.; their daughter, Dorothy Greer Dowell Phillips and her husband, Joe; a beloved granddaughter, Savannah Grace Phillips, and Savannah’s Grandmother, Mrs. J.T. Phillips. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Kent Allen; her niece, Elaine Allen Kerins, and Elaine’s husband, CJ; as well as her nephew, Robert Kent Allen, Jr., all of Dallas. Mrs. Dowell was Society Editor for ten years with The Dallas Times Herald and, upon retirement, was the Woman’s Editor. She was also a member of The Dallas Woman’s Club, Mary K. Craig Class, Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, Shakespeare Study Club, Seneca Review Club, Michael Stoner Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Matheon Club and Afternoon Book Club. Mrs. Dowell attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from SMU, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a gracious and fun-loving hostess, who loved nothing more than entertaining friends and was the first to offer her caring support to them. She was the epitome of a Southern Lady. Burial will be at the family plot at Pecan Grove Cemetery, in McKinney, Texas, for the immediate family. Friends are invited to a memorial service in the Sanctuary of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, where she was a life-long member, at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 17, 2018. There will be a reception in the Parlor immediately following the service.
