DOROTHY ROGERS CULLUM, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, died on January 16, 2014 at the age of 101. She was a life long resident of Dallas. She was born December 17, 1912, and was the daughter of Lucile and Dan D. Rogers, a banker, civic leader and educator for whom the Dan D. Rogers Elementary School is named. She attended Texas Christian University and graduated from Southern Methodist University, where she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma and a Rotunda Beauty. Immediately following graduation she married Robert B. Cullum, a founder of Tom Thumb Grocery Stores and a prominent business and civic leader. Mr. Cullum died in 1981. Mrs Cullum was a devoted member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Board and was active in the We Care Ministry, Meals on Wheels, and the Prayer Tower. She was a former board member of the Junior League of Dallas, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Visiting Nurse Association, and the Hoblitzelle Foundation. She was also a member of the Dallas Woman's Club, Junior League Garden Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae, Dallas Country Club, and Coon Creek Club. Mrs Cullum was a long time volunteer for the United Way and served a term as Residential Chairman. She also volunteered for many years at Parkland Hospital and Children’s Medical Center. Her special interest in the fields of medicine and education led to her endowment of the Dorothy Rogers Cullum Distinguished Chair in Neuro-Oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and the Robert B. Cullum Chair in Accounting at Southern Methodist University. She also established the Dorothy Rogers Cullum Scholarship Fund at UT Southwestern for the benefit of medical students. Her love of travel took her all over the world and she enjoyed many cruises with her family. For twenty five years at Christmas she lit the beautiful tree in front of her house, which became a landmark and destination enjoyed by many. It was pictured in newspapers and magazines all over the country. Most of all she was the beloved matriarch of her large family-a true character and role model who taught us how to live life with zest and purpose. We will remember her for her beauty and style, great sense of humor, boundless generousity, and her deep and abiding faith. She will be sorely missed. The family wishes to thank Joseph Portis and Arlena “Mopsy” Bailey for their 25 years of devoted service. A very special thanks goes to Sherri Stinnett, and also to Lillian Simmons, Leona Anderson, and all those who served as her faithful caregivers.
Mrs Cullum is survived by daughter Betsy Cullum Bolin, daughter Sally Cullum Holmes and husband Houston E. Holmes, Jr., son Dan Rogers Cullum and wife Karen, son Robert Brooks Cullum, Jr. and wife Lucky, grandchildren Robert Brooks Bolin, George Scott Bolin, Kyle Rogers Bolin, Kelly Daniel Bolin, Dr. Houston Eccleston Holmes, III., Robert Cullum Holmes, Blake Rogers Holmes, Dorothy Cullum Schley, Jesse Carter DeShong Cullum, Monece Cullum Appleton, Nicole Cullum Horn, Stuart Rogers Cullum, Andrew Wilson Cullum, Lindsey Cullum Brown, Lauren Brooks Cullum Lang, Chandler Cullum Nixon, 32 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
